Storytelling Portfolio

This page represents a wide sampling of the
methods of storytelling that I have used in my
endeavor to share the beauty and warmth of the
people I have been so fortunate to meet.
I have fallen in love with the world and
these are links to just a few of the stories that
I have brought home.

Lesvos, Greece

Picture
This first writing example gives a short, broad, historical and geographical introduction to the island of Lesvos.

This example gives small glimpses into the lives of the refugees currently living in the camps on Lesvos.

These examples were written for my friends, family and students, which resulted in raising enough funds to purchase 10 ukuleles for the Kara Tepe refugee camp.

Rebetiko

Picture
These two examples documenting the emotions of hearing  Rebetiko for the first time. The birth of Rebetiko was influenced by the movement of people after the Greco-Turkish war. The first example is of a late night rehearsal and the second details meeting the man who would build my baglamas.

These posts helped find funding for 27 ukuleles for Mosaik, a community center in the heart of Mytilini.

Camino De Santiago

Picture
These examples are from two separate trips along the Camino de Santiago. The first example is along the Primitivo way and the second example is from the Portuguese way.

Through blogging about both of these walks, $3500 was raised for Almost Home Kids and $2000 for Girl Forward.

Beautiful People

Picture
These three posts describe people. The first post is about my loud summer neighbor, the second post is about the parents of a friend and the third is of my grandfather. All of these people are perfectly ordinary, but also, they are all perfectly beautiful.

I wrote these simply for the fun of writing.

These examples of academic writing demonstrate competency in discussing and describing musical literature. The first example compares three different musical settings of the words of Goethe's Mignon and the second example is program notes for a Lenten Recital.

Musical Storytelling

Crooked Windmills was written and played by Jennifer Sherrill. Manuel de Falla's Nana was performed
on a performance degree recital with Patrick Godon serving as the accompanist. Four Songs for Voice and Violin was performed on September 26th, 2019 in Mytilene, Greece with Danai Koletsa on violin.

Photography

Unless otherwise noted, all photography on this website and Crookedwindmills.blogspot.com are the work of Jennifer Sherrill.

Non-digital Storytelling

In addition to digital storytelling, I have used the platform of the traditional classical recital to share stories of American composers with Greek audiences, and to introduce a young audience to classical music.

“If the world were merely seductive, that would be easy. If it were merely challenging, that would be no problem. But I arise in the morning torn between a desire to improve the world and a desire to enjoy the world. This makes it hard to plan the day.”  E.B. White
